Most PDF to Word converters advertise themselves as free, then quietly limit what you can actually do. Smallpdf caps free users at two conversions per day. ILovePDF restricts file sizes to 15 MB on its free tier. Adobe Acrobat requires an account and pushes a $22.99 monthly subscription after a handful of conversions.

OnlyFiles uses pdf2docx, an open-source extraction library built on PyMuPDF, to reconstruct your PDF as an editable Word document. The process works in three stages.

First, the library reads the PDF's internal structure. It identifies text blocks, paragraphs, tables, images, and formatting attributes like font size, weight, and color. Second, it maps those elements onto Word-compatible structures. Paragraphs become editable text. Tables are rebuilt as native Word tables with rows and columns intact. Images are embedded in their original positions. The entire conversion happens on a secure server. Your PDF is uploaded over an encrypted HTTPS connection, processed, and deleted immediately after the DOCX file is ready for download. OnlyFiles does not store, read, or analyze your files beyond what is needed to complete the conversion.

The converted document preserves the text content of your original PDF as editable paragraphs. Bold, italic, and font size formatting carry over. Tables retain their row and column structure. Images appear in their original positions within the document.

There are honest limitations to know about. PDF was designed as a display format, not an editing format. It stores text as positioned characters on a canvas, not as flowing paragraphs. The conversion reconstructs editable structure from that visual layout, which means complex formatting can shift. Multi-column layouts may merge into a single column. Text boxes and layered graphics may not translate perfectly. Headers and footers sometimes appear as body text.

Scanned PDFs, where each page is essentially a photograph, will convert as images inside the Word document. The text in those images will not be selectable or editable unless the original PDF already contains an embedded text layer from a previous OCR pass. OnlyFiles does not perform OCR.

For standard business documents, reports, resumes, and invoices, the conversion output is clean and immediately editable. For heavily designed PDFs like brochures or marketing materials, expect to do some manual cleanup in Word afterward.

The tradeoff is straightforward. Adobe Acrobat produces the highest-fidelity conversions, especially for complex layouts and scanned documents with OCR. That quality costs $22.99 per month. Smallpdf and ILovePDF sit in the middle, offering decent quality with daily limits and upsell pressure.

OnlyFiles is the right choice when you need to convert a standard PDF to an editable Word file without paying, without creating an account, and without worrying about your file sitting on someone else's server for hours. For 90% of everyday PDFs, the output is functionally identical to what you get from paid tools.

A free converter like OnlyFiles handles the majority of real-world PDF to Word needs. Use it when you need to edit text in a PDF you received, reuse content from an old document without retyping it, update a form or report that was sent as a locked PDF, or pull data from a PDF into a Word-based workflow.

There are situations where a paid tool is the better choice. If your PDF is a scanned document with no embedded text layer, you need OCR, which OnlyFiles does not provide.
