Free HEIC to JPG Converter

Your iPhone takes photos in HEIC format. Your computer, your email client, and half the websites you use do not accept HEIC. You need a free HEIC to JPG converter that does not upload your personal photos to someone else's server.

This is that tool. Drop your HEIC files below. OnlyFiles converts them to JPG entirely inside your browser. Your photos never leave your device. There is no upload, no account, no watermark, and no daily limit. You can even disconnect from the internet after loading this page and the conversion still works.

This free HEIC to JPG converter handles single files and batches. Drop one photo or twenty. Every file converts locally with zero server contact.

Why this free HEIC to JPG converter is different

Most online converters upload your photos to a remote server for processing. Smallpdf, ILovePDF, and CloudConvert all work this way. Your personal photos sit on their servers for anywhere from one to twenty-four hours before deletion.

OnlyFiles takes a fundamentally different approach. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using heic2any, a JavaScript library that decodes the HEIC container and outputs a standard JPG file without any server communication. Your photos stay on your device from start to finish. There is nothing to trust because there is nothing to upload.

This matters for personal photos, screenshots of private messages, medical images, identity documents, and anything else you would not want on a third-party server.

How the free HEIC to JPG conversion works

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is a format Apple adopted in iOS 11 to save storage space. It uses the HEVC video codec to compress still images, producing files roughly 50% smaller than equivalent JPGs at the same visual quality.

The heic2any library reads the HEIC container in your browser, decodes the HEVC-compressed image data, and re-encodes it as a standard JPG file. The output JPG uses a quality setting of 92%, which preserves visual detail while keeping file sizes reasonable. The entire process runs in JavaScript within your browser tab. No data is transmitted to any server.

You can verify this by opening your browser's developer tools, switching to the Network tab, and watching the conversion happen. You will see zero outbound requests during the conversion process.

What happens to your photo quality

The conversion produces a high-quality JPG that is visually indistinguishable from the original HEIC in nearly all cases. There is a small technical quality reduction because JPG uses lossy compression while HEIC uses a more efficient codec. For sharing, uploading, printing, and everyday use, the difference is imperceptible.

The output file will be larger than the original HEIC. A 3 MB HEIC photo typically converts to a 5 to 7 MB JPG. This is normal and expected, because JPG compression is less efficient than HEVC. If you need a smaller file, use the OnlyFiles image compressor after converting.

EXIF metadata (camera settings, date taken, GPS coordinates) is preserved in the conversion when it is present in the original HEIC file.

Common questions about free HEIC to JPG conversion

How do I open HEIC files on Windows?

The fastest way is to convert them to JPG. Drop your HEIC file on this page and it converts instantly in your browser. No software installation required. Windows 10 and 11 can also install the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, but this does not work in all applications.

Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC?

Apple switched to HEIC as the default photo format in iOS 11 because it produces files roughly 50% smaller than JPG at the same quality. This saves significant storage on your phone. The tradeoff is that many devices and applications outside the Apple ecosystem cannot open HEIC files natively.

Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?

There is a small technical quality reduction because JPG uses lossy compression. In practice, the difference is not visible to the human eye for photos at normal viewing sizes. The conversion uses a 92% quality setting, which preserves detail while keeping file sizes practical.
